Well, here we are, the year 2010!!! A whole decade has passed by since the opening of the Millennium Dome and since we feared that the Millennium Bug would cause planes to fall out of the sky. A whole 10 years has passed, and I’m sure like you, my life has changed dramatically over that period. The big question is what will in be like at the beginning of 2020? While we don’t all have a crystal ball to gaze into I’m certain we would all hope to be in a position with more happiness, more financial abundance, with more freedom to do what we want, with a meaning and fulfilling relationship…the list goes on! However, what can we do to ensure we do achieve these things to make sure we actively create the live for us that we want? Where should the very starting point be to building a business vehicle that will give us the life that life that I want? We have a FREE event on Wednesday 3rd February from 6pm which will shed a lot more light on this - click here for more info on the event and to register. In the mean time I thought I would share with you what I understand the answers to be to some of those big questions.
With a new year ahead a lot of us feel that it is a fresh start to create more in our lives. But really what are we doing differently this time to make sure we actually follow through and maintain the change we need? People very often don’t have a clear enough idea about what they actually want from their life and whilst many want to create change at the beginning of a new year they often don’t habitualise it and end up slipping back to their old ways. One of the reasons for this is that we don’t genuinely make a decision, we just have a preference to stop smoking. The word ‘decision’ means ‘to cut off from’. So when you commit to truly making a decision you should cut yourself off from EVERY other eventuality – with no going back!!! If you want to gain control over your life and create it by design rather than letting other people or circumstances direct where you are going then you must first determine exactly where it is you want to go, and decide to commit to putting it into action NO MATTER WHAT! So below I’ve outlined a process I’ve used which I’ve personally adapted from Tony Robbins’ Awaken The Giant Within.
Step 1: Decide what it is that you actually want to achieve – be very clear and specific!!! If you have a fuzzy goal of just ‘earn more money’ that doesn’t give you much to really work with or to measure you progress against. How can an archer hit the red centre of the target if he doesn’t know EXACTLY where it is? Remember, focus on what you do what, not what you don’t!
Step 2: List as many reasons as possible as to why it is important in your life – Only once you really know why will you have a compelling enough vision. The more powerful reasons you have the more motivation you will have to pull you towards what you do want. If you wanted to run a marathon and the lives of your family depended upon it in order to raise enough money for a major operation you would be far more motivated than if you just thought that it would be a good story to tell your friends at the pub. To help you come up with more reasons imagine what every single area of your life would be like in 10 years time if you did do it, and if you didn’t do it.
Step 3: Understand what limiting beliefs, insecurities or fears you need to overcome – our greatest challenge in life is actually ourselves. A lot of people don’t follow through and actually sabotage their own chances of success because of some deep-rooted belief that contradicts what they want to do. You may want to loose weight, tighten up and look like Cheryl Cole or Brad Pit but you don’t believe you’re actually capable of doing it because you’ve never done it before. You might want to loose that weight but you’re put-off and feel insecure because you think that everyone will be looking at you – a fear that you need to overcome. This requires you to think about yourself, think deeply about what you’ve done in the past. What is it about the way you’ve behaved or thought in the past that has stopped you?
Step 4: Repeatedly visualise and emotionalise your outcome – Ideally do this everyday. If you don’t spend time focusing on what you want and giving it enough attention, how do you hope to achieve it? Have you ever bought something and only then suddenly seen it around everywhere? Out of the millions of things occurring in any one moment your eyes and brain can only perceive a very small fraction. Therefore what you place your attention on will direct your brain to perceive things which it would have ordinarily missed. You will find that the more intensely you mentally focus on what you want to achieve then you will start spotting more opportunities or come up with more ideas to help you reach that goal.
Step 5: Commit to yourself in writing – The very act of writing something down helps to lodge it in the brain. Write with conviction that you will achieve your goal no matter what!
Step 6: Commit in public – ironically we are more likely to let ourselves down than someone else. Committing to people that respect you will help hold you accountable and help you to reinforce your need to do achieve your goal.
Step 7: Surround yourself with like-minded people that can help you – these people will help you to follow-through, come up with ideas and get the resources you need to achieve your goal.
Step 8: Take massive action – you can think about something until the cows come home and while it is important to fully understand and plan what you’re looking to do if you don’t take any action then you won’t set into motion a whole chain of events.
Step 9: Notice what is working and what is not – If you get it right first time then well done!!! If not, then accept it, and even expect it to some extent. Failure if a part of success.
Step 10: Be flexible in your approach, relentlessly, until you get what you want – Dyson tried 5126 times before he invented the bagless vacuum cleaner – he said “Frustration is my inspiration and making mistakes is my method”. Keep trying something new until you finally find something that works. If you have complete conviction and belief that you will find a way, then you will!
I hope this has given you a clearer idea of what you can do to start moving your life forward. If you now want to start taking action and discover in significantly more depth what you can do to accelerate yourself towards those goals we invite you to a FREE goal setting workshop on Wednesday 3rd February from 6pm. I hope you all have a great start to the year and look forward to it being a great one!
